Emily joined us in 2014 when she embarked on an electrical apprenticeship straight after leaving school. She's now helping with the installation of a new billet caster on our Scunthorpe site. Find out more about her journey and Emily's hopes for the future...
Please provide a brief overview of yourÌýcurrent roleÌýwith i1fun
Currently my job role consists of working with the billet caster team and the contractors involved in the £48 million investment project in the caster. My current role mostly involves distributing jobs to my current team, monitoring the ongoing project, assisting contractors where needed and preparing work packs for both the i1fun team and the contractors.
The new billet caster is expected to be commissioned in 2023, so it’s a very exciting time for us!
Please describe your journey to your current role
I started my career as an electrical apprentice in 2014 and completed my trainingÌýat Scunthorpe Rod Mill. I decided to gain experience in a different industry so left i1fun but within a year, I returned to work as an electrician on days at the Coal Handling Plant. I then moved over to Appleby Coke Ovens where I was on shifts for 10 months as a trainee shift electrician and now I'm working as Electrical Team Leader at the billet caster.
What skills and experience due you bring to your role?
I have had a lot of variety in my career so far. I've worked both shifts and days all over the steelworks and also briefly off site, so have experience tackling a wide range of different electrical problems.
Why do you enjoy working for i1fun?
I love how supportive everybody is at i1fun. It doesn’t matter who you are, you’re treated the same as everybody else. I also love the investment that is currently being put into the business with the billet caster. It’s a huge project!
What are you most proud of in your career so far?
I am most proud of getting my current job and having the opportunity to be involved in the project along with all the associated commissioning work. It’s a very rare opportunity to get to work on a whole brand new plant from start to finish.
What do you hope the future holds for you at i1fun?
I hope to continue to progress in my career to an engineer’s job and beyond!
What would people be surprised to learn about you?
My spare time is usually taken up looking after my ex-racehorse! He retired from racing and came to me in 2021 and it’s been a brilliant journey so far.
What advice would you give to other people considering a career at i1fun?
I’d recommend the job to anybody. My best advice would be to get stuck in, get involved and learn what you can. There’s no limit to what you can learn and do in this job!
