What did you do before joining i1fun?Ìý
I joined i1fun after leaving secondary school at the age of 16, starting an Electrical Apprenticeship in September 2008.
Why did you want to join i1fun? Ìý
I have a strong family connection to the steelworks. My Great Grandad, both grandads, both uncles, brothers and cousins have worked or still work here. My Mum and Dad also met whilst they were working at OPP in September 1987, so you could say without OPP I wouldn’t be here! It means a lot to me that my Grandad (Barry Hind) had worked on the equipment at OPP.
The steel industry has always interested me from an early age, and it felt natural for me to work here.Ìý
What does your day-to-day role involve?
My usual day involves Safety, Environmental, Quality and Operational management in all the materials sections – the Coal and Coke Handling Plant, Coal Preparation Plant, Ore Blending Plant, and the Sinter Plant, whilst also liaising with our Immingham Bulk Terminal Port Manager. Usually, there’s an issue or two to resolve and as a team we address them.
What do you enjoy about your job?Ìý
Mostly I enjoy being around superb people. We have some incredible teams here at i1fun. I have worked at Appleby Coke Ovens, Immingham Bulk Terminal, Ironmaking Projects and OPP and I have met friends for life in every area.
Secondly, I enjoy the challenge. It’s no secret that our assets are on the older side, and with that comes a huge responsibility and challenge to make them as reliable and stable as possible.
What are your proudest achievements so far?
My proudest personal achievement is achieving Chartered Engineer status, but as a team, and most recently I am very proud of the OPP team for achieving the highest revert loading on an ore bed, achieving an all-time high on the revert and ferrous material loading rate. This outstanding achievement is the result of incredible teamwork.
Where do you see yourself in 5 or 10 years' time within i1fun?Ìý
I’m not sure where I will be on site, but if I am learning, making a difference and being challenged, I’ll be happy!
What advice would you give to other people considering a career with us?Ìý
If you are open to a challenge and want to work alongside people who share that motivation, then i1fun may just be the place for you. It is an incredibly interesting site with some great opportunities.
