Apprentice training and safety take a positive step forward

Changes made to our apprenticetraining programmes haveresulted in an improved safetyperformance and a higher levelof engagement among ourapprentices.

Improvements in safety performance and levels of engagement amongst our apprentices has come following the change in our apprenticetraining provider to NorthLindsey College. Since thischange, our training centreand the college have workedtogether in partnership to amendthe programme theapprentices receive. This meansall of the gaps are filled in withintheir training process, leadingto significant improvements inboth engagement and trainingstandards. The change in providerhas also allowed the apprenticesto do all their learning on ourScunthorpe site, giving thema better understanding of theengineering environment.

Ruth Parrott, a year threetechnical apprentice, said: “Theapprentice training centre andcurriculum for the technicalapprentices has improvedand the apprentices seemmore prepared for life on plant.”

To complement the training aSafety Engagement Programmehas been introduced, focusingon potential dangers on site. This has led to improved safetyperformance with there beingmore than 100 days since thelast apprentice accident andmore than 150 days since the last incident on site.

The Apprentice Training Centreheld an open day on 16 December2015 to promote these changes. Our apprentices, externalemployees, and companies likeNHS, Qube, Future Bio-Gas andJoyce Engineering attended. The day involved opening theworkshop and allowing the firstyear apprentices to discuss theirtraining and show the changesmade to the centre.

Andrew Stagg, TechnicalTraining Delivery Manager East, said: “It was nice to see so manypeople attend the open dayand the whole experience hashad a positive impact on theengagement of the apprentices. We received great feedback fromthe attendees and the currentyear one apprentices reallyenjoyed the fact that people fromall across the site had taken timeto engage with them.”

After the success of this openday the Training Centre will holdtwo more in 2016 and plan tocontinue developing apprenticehealth and safety training.
