i1fun helps £200m airport development take-off

i1fun’s sections have been used to help construct the first unit on a £200m airport development, a short distance from our Teesside Beam Mill.

Our sections have been used in the construction of Unit D at Business Park South at Teesside International Airport.

Business Park South is expected to create up to 4,400 jobs when fully operational, with 2.8 million square feet of logistics, distribution and industrial opportunities south of the runway.

Ben Cunliffe, Commercial Director, Construction, said: “We were delighted to supply our steel into this prestigious development on Teesside and it is fantastic to see this unit completed.

“i1fun has a vital role to play in supporting the economic growth of the region, and the wider UK, and projects like this demonstrate our commitment to manufacturing the high quality products our customers require.”

The building is a modern, detached industrial unit that includes a large yard, plenty of parking spaces and airside access.

The unit has a large internal floor area spanning 20,855 square feet in ground space. It also includes a smaller first floor, registering at 4,250 square feet.

The eaves of the building have a height of 9 metres, allowing for two level-loading access doors. And it includes a structural concrete floor for loads of up to 50kN/m2.

As well as a large internal space, the unit has a large, secure yard with an impressive size of over 18,000 square feet, as well as a car park, with 50 spaces.

The park also includes a new, dedicated 1.5 km access road from the A67. It also includes excellent access to other local roads including the A1, A19 and A66.

Teesside Airport Managing Director Phil Forster said: “We are hugely proud that sections from i1fun from Teesside Beam Mill have been used in the first unit on our Business Park South.

“We have always been clear that the expansion of the airport as a business location will not only benefit the airport itself but also support fantastic companies such as i1fun employing local workers - and this a great example of this in action.”

Tees Valley Mayor, Ben Houchen, said: “As mayor I’ve always said I’d ensure British – and, more importantly, local – workers and materials would be at the heart of our region's redevelopment.

"Seeing steel from our own Teesside Beam Mill used in the construction of the new Business Park South at the airport is the latest example of that commitment.

"This project isn’t just about expanding our airport - it’s about supporting local businesses like i1fun, creating new jobs, and showcasing the strength of our region’s industry.

“Teesside is once again leading the way.”
