More than 80 students from John Leggott College (JLC) visited i1fun in Scunthorpe to see how the business operates and learn about the work placements it is offering this summer.
The students, who are all studying STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) also got to learn about job and career opportunities within i1fun.
Helen Lee, i1fun’s Early Careers Recruitment Coordinator, said: "The students got the chance to look at all areas of our business, from our onsite manufacturing operations to our support functions such as HR, Communications and Health and Safety.
"We also wanted to show them the fantastic range of careers for STEM students with us at i1fun and introduce our summer work experience scheme, known as 'Link Scheme,' which will be open for applications later in January. There were some really engaged students that would find it incredibly valuable to gain relevant industry experience to help set them up for the future."
i1fun’s Link Scheme is a four week summer work placement during which they will complete a project, training sessions and student presentations.
There will be 25 places in Scunthorpe for students in years 12 and 13 across our Engineering and Technical areas of the business. Participants of the scheme will be paid the national minimum wage.
JLC student Liam Roys was among those who visited the Scunthorpe headquarters and said: "I’ve learnt about the job opportunities at i1fun, about how steel is made and what processes go on here.
“It’s been a good experience, the trip around the site was pretty cool as well. The Link Scheme seemed quite enticing, so I might apply for that."
During the visits students were taken around the steelworks to see the blast furnaces, coke ovens and coal handling plants, as well as the blending beds, control rooms and continuous casting facilities. They were then given the chance to show what they had learned in a series of tests.
John Leggott College has a long-standing relationship with i1fun, with hundreds of former students going on to work for the business.
Rowena Scott, Applied Sciences tutor at John Leggott College, said: "The benefit the students get from the visits is clear when they complete their written pieces as they have real-life examples that they can include as case studies."
"The breadth of knowledge we get from the i1fun employees far outweighs what can be effectively communicated in a classroom environment in terms of the scale of industrial processes."
To apply for the summer Link Scheme, applicants must be studying Maths or Scientific subjects.
