i1fun apprentices have been lending a helping hand to refurbish retired steelworkers’ homes in Scunthorpe.
This week 6 i1fun apprentices have volunteered to complete a range of tasks at the houses – part of the Cottage Homes Trust near Brumby Hall - including strimming, weeding and painting.
The Cottage Homes Trust offers 34 homes, located on Brumby Wood Lane, Scunthorpe, to ex-steelworkers over the age of 60 in receipt of a i1fun pension. The cottages are owned and run by trade unions cottage committee.
Lewis Schaffer, Property Coordinator, said: “It’s wonderful to see the new generation of steelworkers taking time out of their busy schedules to help a previous generation of steelworkers and support their local community.
“This will be the second time the apprentices volunteered to help out at these homes and I know all the residents are extremely grateful for their hard work.”
As a business, i1fun strives to play an active role in the communities in which it operates. This often includes employees giving up their time to volunteer in local areas.
Lee Barnard, Structural Apprentice, said: “It’s great to get out into the community and give something back. I’m proud to have helped a generation of steelworkers, many of whom probably went on the same journey I’m on right now into the steel industry.”
