Rail products showcased in Scunthorpe site tour

We recently hosted a visit for a group from theRail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) at our Scunthorpe site.

They were given a tour of the site including seeing blooms being made in the Concast plant, a rather soggy view over our Ore Blending Beds, a tour of the SRSM mill and also the chance to see the finishing of some Zinoco® coated rails.

The visit gave them the opportunity to understand more about the process of producing high quality rails, as well as giving them an understanding of the i1fun site as a whole.

Mark Hamilton, RAIB Inspector, commented “Thank you for hosting RAIB for the day. The staff who came along have a variety of roles within RAIB and very different levels of technical expertise, but each and every one of us got a lot from the visit. Despite the awful weather, we had a great day. What struck me (along with the sheer scale of the operation at Scunthorpe) was the real pride and enthusiasm amongst all the staff we met.

“Even though several of my colleagues had a good understanding of rail production it was really good to be refreshed on it, to understand how quality is controlled and to see some of the innovations like Zinoco.”

Steven Lewis, Rail Technologies Manager, said “It is hoped that we can continue to work with the RAIB, collaborating on training sessions and looking at relevant case studies to further expand knowledge on rail safety for both sides.”
