Alexander Stadium

The Commonwealth Games opened in spectacular style at Birmingham's Alexander Stadium in July 2022. We're proud to have worked with BHC in the stadium's redevelopment, supplying 580 tonnes of our structural sections.

The Alexander Stadium is an international-standard athletics venue located in the heart of the country. It hosts major events, such as the Diamond League series and the British Championships. It’s also home to the world-famous Birchfield Harriers Athletics Club and was the main athletics venue of the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The £72m redevelopment of the stadium consists of a new main West Stand, the retention of the existing East Stand, and the addition of temporary seating structures at the north and south ends.

The stadium is now able to accommodate around 30,000 spectators during this year’s Games, allowing the temporary seating tiers to be removed after the closing ceremony, and the stadium to revert to a permanent capacity of around 18,000.

The redevelopment has included the laying of a new 400m nine-lane competition standard track, a 6-lane warm-up track and numerous public realm and parking provision works.

The stadium's new West Stand measures 153m long and reaches a maximum height of 28.5m.

Working on-site with McLaughlin and Harvey, BHC fabricated and erected the steelwork for the stand, as well as installing over 5,900m2 of metal decking and precast concrete.
